Against the background of continued economic problems in some states and democratic backsliding across the region in 2023, South Asia remains culturally dynamic. This is expressed in the diverse range of voices engaging in critiquing, analysing and celebrating South Asia, expressed through multiple forms. 2024 will see India, Pakistan and Bangladesh going to polls. The results will be crucial to democracy, civil liberties, and economic development in these countries. Given the growing importance of the region these elections will determine what type of voice and role South Asia will play in the future, on an increasingly fragmented and confrontational international stage.

In this pivotal year, we invite academics, scholars, and practitioners to discuss and deliberate on the path to South Asia in 2024 and the potential futures of South Asia. Papers may be presented on any of the following themes, broadly defined:

  • Voices from South Asia: literature, film, the performing arts, and media
  • Gender Studies – interdisciplinary, intersectional, and interactional developments
  • Internal politics: democracy, elections and political parties in South Asia
  • International relations – South Asia’s external politics
  • History and historiographies of South Asia
  • Economic prosperity, equity, and sustainability in South Asia
  • Emerging methodologies and non-Western paradigms
  • Climate resilience and climate justice in South Asia
  • Culture, tradition, and religion – South Asian lived experiences
